SUMMARY We have a number of progressive programmes available within The Wheels Project which are listed below:-
JUNIOR WHEELS FOR GROUPS OF 13 TO 19 YEAR OLDS
Note: Referrals for Junior Wheels Programmes are usually for pre formed groups only. Referrals come from organisations such as schools, special schools, pupil referral units or youth groups such as Youth Inclusion Programmes and Youth Offending Teams. We have 6 planned intakes at the start of each school term plus occasional intakes during school holidays. Referrals are not accepted on an individual basis. We intend that these programmes form part of an overall strategy of the referring agent towards addressing EXCLUSION; CRIME REDUCTION ROAD SAFETY, UNEMPLOYMENT and LIFE SKILLS. The Wheels Project adopts the the Goverment's 'Every Child Matters' initiative towards the following:- 'Be Healthy, Stay Safe, Enjoy and Achieve, Make a Positive Contribution and Achieve Economic Well Being' At least 2 members of staff are provided and groups enjoy sole use of our facilities. These programmes can be delivered in or outside of school hours.

OUR PRE ENTRY PROGRAMME Arrive Alive Roadshow:
A 2.5 hour Road Safety programme, introduced in June 2008, aimed at 15 -19 year olds who are seriously considering acquiring a moped or own one and need guidance in order to ride their moped on the road legally. We use a mobile workshop equipped with mopeds, tool kits, examples of safety clothing, DVDs and other teaching aids to encourage involvement, aid discussions and assist learners towards safe and legal use of mopeds on a public highway. Max group size is 12.

OUR ENTRY PROGRAMME Kick Start Karting Programme :
A 19 hour programme for groups of 4 to 8 young people aged 14 to 19. We may consider 13 year olds for this course. This course is practical and mainly workshop based. Some discussion work including values and attitudes to responsible driving is included . It concludes with a kart racing Grand Prix involving up to 7 other Wheels based groups. This programme is designed to engage and motivate the students. A report commissioned by Avon and Somerset Constabulary in April 2003 showed that this programme had a positive impact on levels of school attendance and behaviours both during and after completion of the programme. THE COURSES LISTED BELOW ARE FOLLOW ONS FROM THE KICK START KARTS ENTRY PROGRAMME:
Kick Start Plus Moped Programme :
23 hour programme for groups of up to six 16 year olds who must hold a valid provisional driving licence (£50). This course is intended to prepare the learners for Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) which is a legal requirement needed to use a moped on a public highway. It aims to lay added emphasis on Road Safety. The course will identify dangers on the highway, dangerous riding practices and their consequences,and promote safe ways to enjoy motor cycling. We target new moped riders particularly 16 - 17 year olds; a group that has been shown to be most likely to be involved in a serious Road Traffic Collision leading to Death or Serious Injury (DSI) The course is run in a modern, professionally equipped motor vehicle workshop and dedicated groupwork/discussion rooms. The structure of the course will be split between instruction in routine repair and maintenance,cognitive training and an intrduction to riding at an off road site. Our course will consist of six 2.5 hour sessions and is usually equally divided between practical and cognitive skills development. There will also be at least one 15 minute comfort break. The sessions will be inter-active and encourage learnwers to fully participate. The course includes a riding exercise using our mopeds. It is conducted on private land, away from public roads, as a formal riding skills exercise. The 6 sessions delivered on this course designed to prepare them for the concluding session - Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) with a local DSA approved agency. CBT is run over 1 full day starting at 8.00 am. (Bookings subject to availability)

Kick Start Plus Motor Vehicle Servicing Programme:
A 19 hours programme over 1 MORE term that introduces learners to a wide range of servicing duties required for a small family saloon. Group size 4 to 8. National OCR Qualifications are available. Kick Start Plus Bangers 'n' Smash Programme : A 19 hour programme over 1 MORE term involving the preparation of a 1.1 litre motor vehicle to be used to race in a local grass track competition. http://www.srbr.co.uk This programme is only available during the Spring and Summer months. This programme is for 15 to 17 year olds. Group size is restricted to 4. THE COURSE LISTED BELOW IS A FOLLOW ON FROM A KICK START PLUS PROGRAMME:
Community Vehicle Programme
This programme is aimed at groups of 15 to17 year old students and is delivered over a minimum of 3 MORE terms. Students are helped to identify a suitable community group that needs a vehicle to carry out its duties. The students are encouraged to be involved in buying and renovating the vehicle to MOT standard before it is gifted to the community group of their choice at the end of the course. This course carries an accredited OCR qualification in Motor Vehicle Studies. In 2005 we commissioned a report, sponsored by the Big Lottery, identifying best practice used in running this programme. POST 16's PROGRAMME
Our Education Unlimited Programme was for 16 - 18 year olds who had officially left school but were 'Not in Education, Employment or Training' (NEET). There were a limited number of places available to Year 11 students. Referral was on an individual basis. The course was fully funded by co Financed monies from the Learning and Skills Council and the European Social Fund. FUNDING FOR THIS PROGRAMME RAN OUT ON 31 DECEMBER 2006 AND IT HAS THEREFORE BEEN SUSPENDED INDEFINITELY.
